Enzymes in dust mites - a cause of allergies and neurodermatitis
These enzymes are particularly aggressive as they direct their attack on the body's immune system. These protease also damage other functions of the skin. The body's skin surface has a system of protective barriers (so-called "tight-junctions“) between the skin cells, which allow the exchange of substances from the outside environment.
Protective barriers (for example, the protein Occludin) prevent both the uncontrolled penetration of foreign substances or undesirable loss of valuable substances. Some forms of illness - especially neurodermatitis and particularly in the case of infants - the protective functions of the dermis can be severely damaged. The enzymes, named above, can split these protective barriers. Protective cell membranes can be damaged to such an extent that they no longer function normally. Allergens are then able to penetrate the body and cause an allergic reaction.
It is not the dust mite which is responsible for a dust mite allergy but rather the enzymes found in its excreta! As described in the Kalixan concept for the prevention of allergies, the most important step towards an effective therapy for allergies is the avoidance of allergens.
How can we avoid the allergens from household dust mites? Household dust mites are found primarily in mattresses and soft furnishings. It is especially the effects of the enzymes from dust mites in the bedroom which can cause heavy colds and sneezing, asthma, red and sore eyes, which in turn lead to sleep disorders.
